How to Open Task Manager and Fix High CPU/RAM Usage
A PC rarely slows down for no reason. In almost every case, one or two processes are quietly eating up your CPU, RAM, or disk in the background, whether it's a browser tab stuck in a loop, a stalled update, or an app that never fully closed. Windows Task Manager is the built-in tool that shows you exactly what's happening under the hood in real time, and lets you shut down the offending process without restarting your whole system. This guide walks you through opening it, reading the numbers correctly, and safely closing whatever is slowing you down.
Step 1: Open Task Manager Using Shortcuts
Step 1The fastest way to launch Task Manager is a direct keyboard shortcut that skips the Start menu entirely and opens the tool immediately, even if your system is already running slow.

Press all three keys together to open Task Manager.
This combination opens Task Manager instantly, with no intermediate screen. If you prefer, two other methods work as well:
- Right-click the Taskbar and select
Task Managerfrom the context menu. - Press
Ctrl + Alt + Delete, then chooseTask Managerfrom the security screen.
Ctrl + Shift + Esc is the only shortcut that opens Task Manager
directly, without any extra menu in between. It's worth memorizing if your PC freezes often.
Step 2: Identify Resource-Hogging Applications

Once Task Manager is open, click on the Processes tab. You'll see a list of every
running app and background process, along with four key columns that tell you exactly where your
system resources are going:
- CPU — percentage of processing power currently in use by that process.
- Memory — how much RAM the process is holding onto.
- Disk — read/write activity, useful for spotting stuck downloads or updates.
- Network — bandwidth usage, handy for catching apps syncing in the background.
Click any column header to sort from highest to lowest. If a single process is sitting above 80–90% CPU or using several gigabytes of RAM while idle, that's your likely culprit.
Step 3: End the Problematic Tasks Correctly
Step 3With the resource-heavy process identified, select it with a single click, then use the button in the bottom-right corner of the window:
- Click once on the process name to highlight it.

End Taskin the bottom-right corner. - Wait a few seconds for CPU and Memory usage to drop back to normal levels.
Windows Processes unless you know
exactly what they do. Closing a core system process can cause instability. Stick to closing apps
and background tasks you recognize.
If a process keeps reappearing or maxing out resources again shortly after, it's usually a sign the app needs an update, a reinstall, or that it should be removed from your startup programs.
